Hand painting candles

Traditionally, incense, flowers, votive candles, water, and food (mainly rice) have been given to ancestors as offerings. In olden times when there were no flowers in the winter, people who wanted to offer flowers would paint flowers on candles. The pretty colors and exquisite paintings have made the palm-sized, round candles that float on water very popular with visitors. You can paint a candle and make it your own special kawaii souvenir.
