From the Edo period to the Meiji period, Sakata was a port town that developed through trade, with a fleet of merchant ships called Kitamaebune. Hiyoriyama Obataro opened in 2021 after renovating a restaurant built in the Meiji and Taisho eras on Hiyoriyama facing Sakata Port.
